The children of Pragathi Children’s Society, Buddhist Centre, Rambewa, Anuradhapura were able to start a Little Library on their own with the support of CUP on 18th June 2011.
The concept of Little Library is to enhance the ability of reading among children and also to encourage them towards creative writing. The children will get more opportunities to learn leadership skills, team work, organizing patterns and sharing with others through the experience gained in this project.
Priyadarshani Kumari Seneviratne who is studying in Grade Six, is sponsored by Ms. Dharshini Mirigama. Priyadarshani dreams to become a music teacher after completing her studies.
The concept of "Singithi Pothgula" - Little Library was introduced by CUP, in order to improve the reading habits and the creative writing among children. The 8th Little Library project embarked upon by CUP was established at Sri Sugatha Sunday School at Kandewatta, Kegalle. The children of Sri Sugatha Sunday School will become the reader members who would immensely benefit from this little library.
Children’s Upliftment Programme (CUP) together with Bosath children’s Educational Foundation (BCEF) and Katuwawala Lion’s Club conducted a free IT Training programme for the students of the Sunday school at Sri Paramavishuddaramaya Temple, Katuwawala. An award ceremony of the 3rd batch was held on the 2nd of April 2011 for the students who successfully completed the six month beginners and advanced course of this programme.
CUP is extremely grateful to the recent donors who have come forward to support needy children and give financial assistance to towards their education. Further seven children received scholarships from generous donors. Their progress is monitored by CUP officials on a quarterly basis. They keep in touch with the beneficiaries constantly to ensure that they perform satisfactorily.
An award ceremony was held on 2 March 2011 at Depanama Sri Devadara Daham School for students who excelled at an examination conducted by the IT Centre at the completion of a course in MS Office. All the students showed much keenness and 16 students who received awards performed extremely well. In addition, seven students received scholarships to follow a three month course at the London Business School, Bambalapitiya.
The prize distribution for the winners of the Gee Sithuwam 2009/2010 art competition was held at the Victoria Masonic Hall, Colombo 3 on Saturday 22 January 2011. The event was the culmination of a competition held over a period of three months. Children from all parts of the country participated in the competition. The children’s newspaper, Mihira, was the co-sponsor of the event and gave unstinted support towards conducting this competition.
The fifth Annual General Meeting of the Children’s Upliftment Programme was held at the Galle Face Hotel on 18th December 2010 at 3.00 p.m.
Mr. U. R. Jayaweera Bandara, immediate past president was unanimously elected the Patron of the organization and Mr. L. Saranapala was elected as the President.
CUP was able to donate NSB savings accounts to ten selected girls who are resident at Bellantara, Mithsevana Government Children Home for the Specialties on the 9th December 2010.This donation was sponsored by Mrs.R.Weerasuria.
